This week I got to go to the ER! Our dear Puggle, Spike, aka "The Poot", was enjoying a dig in the garbage after dinner. He sure loves pasta! He can be a bit surly around food, so the kids typically won't attempt to get him out. I came in and grabbed him by the collar and WHAM! Off to the ER with my dear mother I went.
Luckily, it only took about 2 1/2 hours. Needed a shot, some irrigation and a weeks worth of antibiotics. It's looking pretty good now...some bruising. I think there's a bit of nerve damage because it feels weird too, but I think that will go away.
Carter announced that the Poot has bitten him "about 11 times". Really? That's not good. Of course he hasn't broken the skin, but still. This is the way he deals with getting his way. He's a lot like some of the kids, as a matter of fact. Scott asked for a show of hands on who had been bitten by the Poot. About 10 hands went up. I'm betting everyone but Scott has had a nip. It's definitely time for action.
Needless to say, the Pooter needs some training. He's also made three escapes down the street this week and it's only a matter of time before he gets clipped by a speeding car. The boys can't seem to figure out how to keep the garage door closed. So, we'll be focusing on some Poot training for the next few weeks. I've DVR'd a bunch of "Dog Whisperer" episodes and I think I"ll sign him up for some more training this summer. But it's us that needs the training...not really him. Wish us luck!

Oh dear. Sorry about the bite! I hope you won't mind a bit of unsolicited advice, but when it comes to kids & dogs, I get worried. Hubby is a veterinarian too, so we talk a lot of doggie behavior in our home. First off, a big hurrah on giving the boot to Poot's bad manners. Take control of that dog and show him who is the Alpha in your home. However, I would NOT recommend the dog whisperer's methods. (Goo.gle dog whisperer controversy to get insight on this topic.) He's good entertainment, but utilizes outdated and sometimes dangerous dog training methods. Please check out Patricia McConnell or Victoria Stilwell's training methods. More positive and humane. You want your dog to behave because he wants to please you, not because he is afraid of you. BTW--puggle's are known for being headstrong and trying to show dominance. Food aggression is one of the ways they do this. Oh boy...this is long winded. Sorry! But I hate to see poor Poot get himself into a serious situation one day. Best of luck!
